With over 100 attempts, Joe D'Amato made one good porn film, JUNGLE HEAT, about Jane and Tarzan. With cavemen grunting and humping their way through a word-less exercise, HOMO ERECTUS was his chance to strike gold again, but he didn't even try.
Basically this is a familiar depiction, which we've seen all the way from those delightful Hammer cave women movies to QUEST FOR FIRE, of primitive men and women getting it on. There's conflict between competing tribes, but basically it's all sex.
That led D'Amato to take the easy way out, giving zero content and wall-to-wall sex footage. It's a shame because there are capable performers from the Continental XXX stock company in the cast: Roberto Malone, bald and convincingly horny; Gerry Pike as the lead stud, and terrific beauties like Roxanne Hall, Penelope and Laura Palmer.
In the TARZAN knockoff, one came to feel real emotions for Rocco and his mate Rosa Caracciolo as Jane, but here it's merely mindless humping. With gestures and body language replacing dialog, Joe could have created affecting, even sentimental hookups between the cave people, but missed the opportunity. U.S. release on DVD has no credits whatsoever, befitting the junky result.
